A retired lawyer, Lorenzo, is dying following a heart attack. Estranged from his family, he gradually grows close to his new neighbors. Yet the happy young family next door is not all that fine, and a catastrophe has finally pulled them apart. Master director Gianni Amelio draws inspiration from Moreno’s prizewinning novel The Temptation to be Happy , putting it into a powerfully acted character study and an evocative portrait of middle-class Naples. Carpentieri commands attention and affection as a self-centered grouch with a heart of gold, winning the Italian Golden Globes Best Actor award.
